Screen shot 2014-08-31 at 11.06.37
  • The Legal & ethical requirements can be drawn upon (as well as Copyright) from Unit 01.
  • Write a report (or present in a format of your choice) explaining whether there needs to be changes BEFORE producing the final product and have their expectations now been met.
Production Plan – YOU MUST complete this task and this links with Unit 14.

LO4 - P4 and M2 - Be able to Pitch Ideas

Be able to Pitch Ideas

YOU MUST gather your findings for LO 1, 2 and 3 and “pitch” them to a prospective publisher that may be interested in publishing your magazine.

The pitch will be presented in class in front of your peers and should be presented in a professional manner.

Other tasks to complete:

Client Meeting – 1-2-1 meeting with the Publisher OR send them the link to your Prezi presentation and obtain feedback from them.
Online Survey – Ask your peers OR potential readers to give their opinions on the proposal for this new publication.
Example Pitch:

Useful Information/Links:
Publisher Costs – Case Study
mixmag MIXMAG – http://mixmag.net
Distributor:
Seymour look after the logistics and deal with wholesalers and retailers like:
wh smith
Breakdown of Profits for selling the magazines:
60% to Publisher – e.g Bauer
5% to Distributor seymour
8% to Wholesaler
27% to retailer – e.g wh smith

Printing Quotes/Costs –
  • Fill in the details required (See below as an example) – THEN work out how much per. copy it would cost to print the magazine – For example:
Screen Shot 2015-01-16 at 12.51.21
£11,998.55p – 10,000 Copies – 100 Pages (Make sure you look at your Flat Plan and ‘Magazine of Inspiration’ to see how many pages there are going to be) =
£1.20 per. Copy –
  1. Is this realistic?
  2. Is this too costly when compared to the price of the magazine?
  3. HOW else can you cut costs to a MINIMUM?
Distribution to Retailer Costs –
  • Get a Quote
  • Publisher – Are the Publisher you’re pitching to distributing their own magazines?
Advertising Revenue –
Key – How much are you going to charge for the following:
FH (Full Page)
Half Page
Other Advertising Methods – YOU SHOULD investigate other revenue that can be generated through advertising space – For example:
  1. Visit the Publisher in mind
  2. Download their Media Pack – e.g KERRANG!http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/uploads/Kerrang!-MediaPack-2011.pdf – Look at the revenue that can be generated:
Screen Shot 2015-01-16 at 13.02.39
  • Research what some of these terms mean BELOW:
Marketing –
4Ps to 4Cs

  • Research this process – Make sure you source WHERE you obtained your research.
  • Apply this to your own Magazine in the pitch.
Audience –
  • Theories – Theories – Theories –

YOU SHOULD refer to other theories like KatzMaslow and Hartley as well.
Spending Power – WHY have you priced (£) your magazine in the category? Link to your Primary research for Unit 01 and/or Unit 13.
survey monkey
Questions should revolve around the following:
  • Quality of the Pitch
  • Meanings behind the magazine name
  • Quality of the pre-production materials presented

Brief

Planning And Pitching A Print-Based Media Product

YOU MUST provide the Exam board with evidence of Planning a Front Cover and DPS (Double Page Spread) for your own Music Magazine from the sub-genre of your choice – This SHOULD have been decided during Unit 1 – Analysing Media Products and Audiences.

The unit is made of 5 Learning Objectives

By completing this unit learners will understand printbased media products and the importance of research and planning to produce them. They will understand how to generate and select ideas for their own print-based media products, and pitch them to an editor, a client or a focus group. Learners will understand how to use feedback gained from their pitch to inform a production plan
